What Is MCP? The Plug That Lets Claude Use Your Apps

AR005 · 26 Oct 2026 · 54 s · by — AI Strategist, Practitioner & Educator · Founder, AI Center of Excellence

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the plug that lets Claude or other AI models use your apps. Anthropic open-sourced it, and Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Cursor all use the same standard: think of it as USB-C for AI. Claude's directory lists over a thousand connectors (1,011 on 25 October 2026), such as Notion, Gmail, Slack and Figma, and even the free plan can connect one. n8n can be an MCP server too, so Claude can run your workflows. One rule: only connect what you trust, and never your company's data without approval.

What is MCP? It's a plug which lets Claude or other LLMs use your apps. MCP means model context protocol, open-sourced by Anthropic. Think of it as a USB-C for AI. One standard, and Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, and others all plug into the same tools. Claude's directory alone lists a thousand connectors. Notion, Gmail, Slack, Figma. Here's how you plug in one. In Claude, select Customize, Connectors tab, and search for connector you need. Pick Notion, log in, done. Even the free plan gets one. And if you use n8n, it can be an MCP server too, so Claude can run your workflows.

One rule, only connect what you trust and never your company data without approval. So MCP isn't magic. It's a plug. You choose what goes in.
