How to Add Claude to Excel (and the First 3 Things to Ask)

How to add Claude to Excel from inside Excel, and three useful questions for any workbook. In Excel: Home → Add-ins → search "Claude" → Claude by Anthropic for Excel → Add, then Log in and confirm the same code in your browser. Then ask: explain this workbook (every answer links to the cells it used), find the errors (in the demo it found that the Total's SUM stops one row short and leaves out a region, and changed nothing), and what happens if prices go up 5% (it answers without touching the file; when you ask it to do it, it asks for permission and adds 5% as a new input). It needs a paid Claude plan. Save a backup first and use it on files you trust.

Do it now

Add Claude to Excel and ask your first 3 questions

  1. 1In Excel: Home → Add-ins → search "Claude" → Claude by Anthropic for Excel → Add.
  2. 2Click Log in. Excel shows a code; check that the browser page "Connect Claude for Excel" shows the same code, then Connect.
  3. 3Ask 1: "Explain this workbook: what does each sheet do and where do the totals come from?" Every answer links to the cells it used; click a link and Excel jumps to that cell.
  4. 4Ask 2: "Find the errors in this workbook and tell me why they happen." It reports what it found and changes nothing without asking.
  5. 5Ask 3: "What happens to the total if all prices go up 5%?" It answers without touching the file. Ask it to do it, approve Allow once, and it adds 5% as a new input and recalculates.
  6. 6Save a backup copy first, and use it only on files you trust.

Here's how to add Claude to Excel and the first things you can ask about your workbook. In Excel, press home, add ins, search for Claude, Claude by Anthropic for Excel, add, log in, connect. It needs a paid Claude plan to have it working. And now examples of the things you can ask Claude about any of the workbook you have. Number one, explain this workbook. Every answer will be linked to the cells it used. You click on them, and Excel opens on this exact cell. Number two, find the errors.

Here Claude found that total skipped central cell. The sum stops one row short. Claude changes nothing in the workbook without asking. And number three, let's ask what will happen if prices go up 5%. It responds, but do not automatically change the numbers. If we ask to do it, it adds 5% as a new input and recalculates it all. Quick advice, always save a backup version and use it on files you trust. Claude in Excel does magic. With couple of clicks, you are able to do things which before only Excel gurus were able to make.

Questions people ask

Do I need a paid plan for Claude in Excel?
Yes. Anthropic says Claude in Excel is available on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans (claude.com docs, checked 29 October 2026); the free plan does not include it.
Does Claude change my spreadsheet without asking?
In the demo it did not: it answered the questions without editing anything, and when asked to apply a 5% price increase it showed a Permission required box (Deny, Always allow, Allow once) before changing cells, then added the 5% as a new input instead of overwriting the prices.
