Some tasks have a natural safety net where errors surface before they cause harm; others don't, and a wrong answer looks exactly like a right one. The real skill is judging the risk of the mistake, not the quality of the model.

Trust in AI is not a property of the model — it is a property of the task. Some tasks have a built-in safety net: if you ask AI to draft something, brainstorm ideas, or summarise a document for your own use, and it gets something wrong, you will likely notice before it causes harm. The stakes are low, you are reviewing the output anyway, or an imperfect answer is still good enough. These are low-risk uses, and using AI without verification there is entirely reasonable.

Other tasks have no safety net. Legal facts, medical information, citations, code that goes directly to production, financial data — in these cases, a wrong answer looks exactly like a right one. Confident tone, clean formatting, plausible details. The error travels forward silently until something breaks in the real world. This problem is getting harder over time: as models become more accurate, they also become worse at expressing uncertainty. The training process pushes toward decisive answers, so the confident tone you hear is not a reliability signal — it is the default output. The framework is two questions: if this is wrong, will I catch it? And if I don't, does it actually matter? Your answers determine whether to accept the output or verify it.
